Last year in March, Compass wrote about one of Taiwan's biggest and most colorful religious events, which takes place in central Taiwan annually at this time. As I personally witnessed for the first time then, the week-long pilgrimage by devotees of the goddess Matsu is an epic occasion unlike anything that most people have ever seen before. To the raucous accompaniment of unending fireworks, trumpets and music, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims start their long journey on foot in the middle of the night from the Jhen Lan Temple in Taichung county's Dajia township, wreathed in smoke from incense and pyrotechnics, as sky lanterns soar into the heavens above them. With some encouragement from the Taichung county government, we have decided to revisit this year's pilgrimmage in the cover story, providing details to help you check out the excitement this month. Be sure to bring a good camera, too.
